September 1993: “Lea Valley”, Valley Cruises of Atherstone
We hired “Lea Valley” for a long weekend, starting at their original base at Atherstone. The boat was small but was quite comfortable and was smartly presented. Being just 34 feet meant we were able to share locks with other boats, something we’d done on “Nuthatch” a couple of years earlier. We were blessed with some good weather and pottered north for a few days before turning round and re-tracing our steps. The engine was a 2-cylinder Lister, which was a bit noisy compared to modern engines, but knowing their reliability and distinctive noise I thought was great! The boat was retired several years later, the company is still going strong today, having moved to a purpose built marina, and changed into new hands in 2006.
